Prime suspect in Muvota’s murder surrenders to DCI
The prime suspect in Samuel Mugoh Muvota’s murder in Nairobi’s Mirema Drive estate has surrendered to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Denis Karani Gachoki surrendered today after his identity as the mastermind of the heinous daytime shooting was revealed in a notice.
The DCI made the statement on Friday amid mounting doubts about the veracity of the police story, which described the 40-year-old man slain when an intruder sprayed six gunshots into his vehicle as a notorious criminal.
Police believe a fallout between Gachoki and his reported boss, Muvota, was the motive behind his gangland-style execution in the city.
They claim that hours after the murder, forensic cyber detectives traced Gachoki’s phone to Burnt Forest in Uasin Gishu county and believed that he may have crossed the border into a neighbouring country.
According to the agency, the efforts to track the suspect had been ineffective and that he was working in collusion with other rogue cops to avoid arrest.
Gachoki’s accomplice was texted minutes before his arrest on one occasion, according to DCI, “putting a spanner in the works of a painstaking operation that had taken months to put together.”
Gachoki has apparently been on the DCI’s radar for quite some time owing to his alleged involvement in the ‘Pishori’ syndicate but efforts to reel him in have proven unsuccessful.
“Efforts by detectives to arrest him have been futile since the thug who is well loaded, influences rogue cops who tip him off once an operation for his arrest has been launched,” said the DCI in a statement.
“In one occasion, Gachoki’s accomplices texted him just minutes before his arrest, throwing a spanner in the works of a meticulous operation that had taken months to put together.”
The investigative agency also said that its detectives had discovered that Gachoki had a spat with his assassinated boss over the distribution of revenues from their criminal activities.
