Nakuru Girls closed indefinitely after student unrest over exams fever

Nakuru Girls High School has been closed indefinitely following unrest and destruction of property by students.

Reports indicate that the unrest was triggered by the upcoming end-of-term examinations as they were dissatisfied with the examination schedule, which the administration declined to adjust.

On Tuesday, the students went on a rampage, destroying school property of unknown value.

As a result, Nakuru Girls Principal Rose Menjo closed the institution on Wednesday with the students being sent home.

This comes days after Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet County was also closed following unrest over alleged sexual abuse by a male teacher.

Claims emerged that the teacher groomed unsuspecting learners and allegedly engaged them in romantic affairs at the institution.

The assertions were made by a group of alumnae, some of whom narrated their supposed encounters with the teacher in connection.

The students  went on a rampage on Sunday, demanding action against the teacher.

As the situation escalated, Principal Clara Mitei ordered the school’s closure until further notice.

The protest turned chaotic, leading to a stampede in which several students sustained minor injuries.

Police reports indicate the injured were taken to St Claire Kaplong Mission Hospital for treatment.

The incident also led to damage to school property.

Authorities are investigating the claims, while education officials work to determine the next course of action regarding the school’s reopening.

Mid-this month, Lari Boys High School in Kiambu County was also closed indefinitely after a fire linked to student unrest destroyed key facilities in the school.

The inferno gutted the administration block and several classrooms, sparing only the dormitories.

The unrest was triggered after the students were reportedly denied access to musical instruments.
