NPS call out Malala over demeaning sentiments on police qualifications
The National Police Service (NPS) has castigated Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala for making demeaning remarks on their profession.
Kakamega gubernatorial hopeful allegedly demeaned police saying the disciplined services do not need highly qualified personnel.
Through a statement by the Police spokesman Bruno Shioso, the NPS expressed disappointment with the remarks by the Senator.
“We as NPS fraternity, including our dear families and friends, are utterly disappointed with such unwarranted and outrageous remarks, which we find too demeaning and only aimed at scandalizing a noble profession deployed in the service and good of the public
“That, more disappointed we are as police, given these unfortunate remarks were made by a leader we not only hold in high esteem but one we also continue to provide round-the-clock protection with pride and competency,” part of the statement read.
Shioso noted that NPS was a professional entity composed of all cadres of Kenyans as envisaged by the constitution.
NPS reassured all police officers and urged members of the public to treat the remarks by the Senator with the contempt they deserve.
“The inspector general lauds the officers who covered the event’s security for remaining calm and composed despite the grave humiliation that they encountered,” Shioso said.
Malala who was speaking during a Kenya Kwanza campaign rally in Kakamega claimed that police officers don’t need to be educated adding that their only job is to hold guns.
“The work of police officers is to hold their guns only. Does that need any education? If someone scored C+ in their KCSE exams, lets take him/her to University. Police work is for school dropout. (Kazi ya Askari si nikushika bunduki tu peke yake. Hio inahitaji masomo yeyote kweli? Kama mtu alienda form four na alipata C+ tupeleke yeye aende University asome. Kazi ya askari ni ya hawa majamaa ambao wako hapa (pointing at police officers), hao ambao waliacha shule na hawakufanikiwa kumaliza),” Malala stated.
Malala has since apologized for his unfortunate sentiments adding he was taken out of context.
“My attention has been drawn to a video circulating on social media about my utterances on the police, I wish to categorically state that my remarks were taken out of context. Their importance to us cannot be overlooked. It is in light of this that I wish to withdraw my remarks and apologize to our disciplined forces for the discomfort my remarks may have caused,” senator Malala said.
