United Opposition hit ground running ahead of picking a joint candidate for face Ruto in 2027

The fierce political face-off during the 2027 general elections is shaping up with the United Opposition hitting the ground running mobilising party structures, holding public conferences and quietly short-listing potential flagbearers as it races to field a single candidate to face-off with incumbent President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

According to political pundits, the flurry of activities, from national delegates conferences to behind-the-scenes negotiations suggests opposition leaders are treating unity not as a slogan but as an urgent strategic requirement.

The team, bringing together Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Jubilee Party president candidate, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (Democracy for Citizens Party), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Party), Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Justin Muturi (DP Party) and Eugene Wamalwa’s DAP Kenya Party has since appointed appointment of the former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as the unit’s spokesperson.

Yesterday, Gachagua pitched camp in Bisil area within Kajiado Central, in Kajiado County while Matiang’i toured Nakuru mobilizing their supporters to register as voters in the ongoing mass enlisting exercise of voters by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Separately, the duo tore into Ruto’s legacy demanding for better governance and accountability.

The forceful seizure of Maa land by those in power is a grave insult to the community and must be unequivocally condemned and exposed. Those with an insatiable appetite for land should be ashamed of their actions and disregard for rightful ownership of land. Together with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, and other leaders, we acknowledged the warm greetings extended by the people of Bisil, Kajiado Central, in Kajiado County. Our unwavering commitment to building a better, more equitable country remains unstoppable,” Gachagua said while in Bisil.

While engaging the youths in Nakuru, Matiang’i has called on young Kenyans to actively engage in shaping the country’s future, following a consultative meeting with youth leaders in Nakuru Town.

In a tweet shared after the event yesterday, Matiang’i expressed optimism about Kenya’s prospects, emphasising the need to listen to the younger generation’s ideas and aspirations.

“The session reaffirmed my belief in the potential of the youth to spearhead positive changes and address the failures of the present…The significance of this meeting lies in its potential to foster greater involvement of youth in the political and social spheres of Kenya,” Matiang’i noted urging them to register as voters.

Speaking during the Kangema Constituency Economic Empowerment engagement at General Kago Stadium in Kangema town, Murang’a County, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged all elegible voters to register as voters.

“I want to ask all the eligible voters who have not registered to do so because it is their right to vote but they will only participate if they are registered,” DP stated.

“This is a democratic nation and you can only choose your leaders through your vote. I ask you to encourage our youths to register so they can elect the leaders they desire. Without your vote, you cannot be in a position to participate in making that choice,” the DP emphasised.

The other Kenya Kwanza brigade led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula held another empowerment engagement in Teso North Constituency for Women Empowerment Programme hosted by area MP Uku Kaunya.

Others present include Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, President and president’s Personal Assistant Farouk Kibet.

The team is scheduled to take the empowerment campaigns to Elgeyo Marakwet and Kericho this weekend.
