Leaders from regions experiencing drought in Northern Kenya has called on IEBC to consider extending voter registration exercise by two weeks.
The leaders from Samburu and Laikipia noted that many young people have moved with their animals in search of pasture and it might be difficult for them to register as voters.
Samburu East Member of Parliament Raphael Letimalo noted that it has proven difficult for IEBC clerks to follow those who have moved out as the president directed since they are not camping at one place.
Speaking at Girgir Primary school in Archers Post after a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of an administration block, Letimalo said rains might come soon and the herders will be back home just by the end of the set registration period.
He noted that this would be the right time to register the people at their places where they will vote comfortably.
The legislator further called on employees at lodges and conservancies who wanted to transfer their votes to where they will be working during the August elections to do so at the polling stations noting that the exercise had been brought closer.
Earlier anyone who wanted to transfer would travel to Wamba which is the constituency headquarter something that many never did considering the distance and could have opted to do without voting since they will be still at work on August 8.
Elsewhere in Laikipia gubernatorial aspirant and former assistant minister Ndiritu Muriithi has echoed the need for the commission to extend this period. Muriithi noted that the county has experienced a wave of insecurity from private farm invasion by herders and this has caused a big number of people to migrate.
Speaking in Nanyuki when he met with KNUT members, he said that there is need for the government to drive out all illegal herders from Laikipia to restore sanity that has been witnessed in the past.
