Big winners in CS Yatani Sh3.3 trillion budget
The Government yesterday announced its priorities for the coming fiscal year as it presented the last budget which totaled Sh.3.3 trillion.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani said the sectors in which the government will invest the most money are education, infrastructure, security and the Big Four Agenda – the big winners.
The education sector received the lion’s share of Sh544.4 billion with an equivalent to 16.48 percent of the national budget.
The funds will be used to fund programmes like Free Primary Education and Free Day Secondary Education, as well as insurance cover for secondary school students through National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
“In light of the revenue challenges and significant expenditure demands, spending in FY 2022/23 will focus on supporting economic recovery and the “Big Four” Agenda to ensure the highest impact on the well-being of Kenyans,” said CS Yatani.
Infrastructural Development was allocated Sh.368.5 billion while National Security received Sh.317.9 billion and President Kenyatta’s pet project, the Big Four received Sh.146.9 billion.
Under the Big Four, Sh.10.1 billion will go to supporting manufacturing for job creation, Sh.46.8 billion will go towards enhancing food and nutrition security.
A further Sh.62.3 billion will be earmarked for providing Universal Health Coverage to guarantee quality and affordable healthcare to all Kenyans and Sh.27.7 billion will go towards the provision of affordable and decent housing for all Kenyans.
County governments came in second with a Sh.407.1 billion allocation, with Sh.370 billion in equity and Sh.37.1 billion in conditional allocations.
Affordable electricity (Sh91 billion), Parliament (Sh50.2 billion), the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) (Sh21.7 billion), the National Youth Service (Sh13.1 billion), and the Higher Education Loans Board (Sh13.1 billion) are among the other beneficiaries (Sh6.8 billion).
