National Assembly invites public participation ahead of CS nominees vetting
The National Assembly Committee on Appointments has invited members of the public to submit written statement on oath with supporting evidence, contesting the suitability of persons nominated to the Cabinet.
It has published the names of Justin Bedan Muturi Njoka and Mercy Kiiru Wanjau for the positions of Secretary to the Cabinet and Attorney General respectively and 22 Cabinet Secretary nominees.
This is after the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula directed that the names of the nominees be published in the newspaper today.
“Pursuant to the provisions of section 6 (9) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011 (No. 33 of 2011), the Committee on Appointments invites interested members of the public to submit any representation by written statement on oath (affidavit) with supporting evidence contesting the suitability of the said nominees for appointment to their respective positions,” read the statement.
As the House Business Committee (HBC) is set to be reconstituted starting next week, a showdown over the screening of Cabinet nominees looms in the National Assembly.
The Speaker indicated that the Committee on Appointments promptly starts the process of considering the nominations after it is created in order to hasten the completion of the vetting process.
In order for Parliament to debate and eventually approve or reject some or all of the names, Wetangula also ordered that the report on the vetting of Cabinet nominees be presented on or before October 27, 2022.
The National Assembly must consent the names of the nominated Cabinet Secretaries by November 3, 2022 in accordance with the Speaker’s timetable.
