Suspect shot fleeing after robbery tell court police have denied him medication
While appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja of Makadara law courts in Nairobi yesterday, Stephen Karungu told the court that he had been taken to hospital but his medical drugs were withheld from him, therefore treatment was discontinued.
A suspect shot by the police in Huruma, Nairobi while escaping after allegedly robbing a pedestrian claimed police have denied him medication.
While appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja of Makadara law courts in Nairobi yesterday, Stephen Karungu told the court that he had been taken to hospital but his medical drugs were withheld from him, therefore treatment was discontinued.
The suspect further claimed he is an employee of a public transport (PSV) Sacco and his arrest was a case of mistaken identity.
However, documents in court indicated that Karungu was shot by a police officer who responded to a distress call by a victim of robbery and the suspect was among the three men who had waylaid and robbed the victim at knife-point.
Karungu was arrested alongside his accomplice Kelvin Gitonga but their accomplice fled and police claim the two suspects were each found with a Somali sword during the arrest.
Police had recommended a case of robbery with violence where they two were to be charged with robbing Joseph Musyoka, the victim, of Sh2,200 but the office of the Director of Public Prosecution pointed out gaps in the investigations that made the evidence insufficient.
Karungu and Gitonga were therefore charged with preparation to commit a felony contrary to section 308 (1) of the Penal Code.
“On June 10, 2025 at Huruma Valley Bridge area within Mathare Sub County within Nairobi County you were found while armed with a dangerous weapon namely a knife which indicated that you were so armed with intent to commit a felony namely robbery,” charges against each of them read in part.
Both denied these charges before Karanja who ordered they be returned to Huruma police station so that Karungu is escorted to hospital for further treatment.
Musyoka is listed as a witness alongside the under-cover police officers who found him lying down after the suspected robbers left him with a warning not to raise an alarm.
The suspects had allegedly threatened to stab him with knives during the robbery.
The matter will be mentioned on June 16 when the court will set bail and bond terms for the suspects and schedule hearing dates.
