Onyonka’s challenge after Wednesday’s deaths, injuries during Gen Z protests

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka says there will never be peace in the country if justice is not served to the families that lost their loved ones in the Gen Z protests last year and this year.
Speaking outside the Kenyatta National Hospital after visiting those who sustained injuries from the Wednesday protest to mark the first anniversary of last year’s June 25 killings, Onyonka called on President William Ruto to send the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen to visit those who are admitted at KNH after being injured by police officers during the protests.
According to the legislator, it is upon the president to decide whether he is “a statesman or a village boy with power and money.”
“The way he sent Murkomen to go and look at the shops in the CBD, let him come and see the kids who have wounds and have been shot by the police, and are in pain in the beds. If there is no justice, there shall never be peace in this country. If there is no justice, Kenya will never be anything,” Onyonka stated.
The senator had accompanied the Opposition leaders, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-Kenya Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who called on the state to arrest those they claim are funding protesters.
According to former CS Matiang’i, the government should not be playing PR by claiming the opposition is responsible for funding protesters.
Matiang’i added that security matters should never be politicised.
On his part, Eugene has maintained that goons who infiltrate peaceful protests are funded by the government.
The former Defence CS gave an example of March, where goons were seen following the President as he toured Nairobi and were paid chunks of money each day after the tour.
“When President Ruto toured Nairobi for one week, all leaders saw the goons who came out and were being financed by the president and the governor. Everywhere they went, you could see them line up and get paid,” he said.
He added that the Country would soon turn into Haiti because the President allowed the politics of goons to come in.
According to Wamalwa, it is absurd that the Kenya Police are dealing with goons in the Caribbean country while goons are being sponsored by the state back in their home country.
“I want to tell President William Ruto that when you introduce the politics of goons, it is like riding the back of a Tiger because no one is in control, and this is where Haiti has reached because there was a regime that allowed goons to take over. You cannot send Police officers to Haiti to deal with goons, and you and the governor are sponsoring goons,” he added.
