The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Chairman, Johnstone Muthama has dismissed reports of a formal coalition agreement between the party and the Amani National Congress (ANC) as well as Ford Kenya.
Speaking during a press briefing today, Muthama said the three parties are yet to sign any agreements, and only exist as ‘friends’ brought together by the need to work together, to unite the country.
“We are friends, when the time of agreeing on the coalition terms we will deal with it. Our supporters wherever you are that your party had no coalition agreement it has not signed any coalition agreement and if that will be done later alone you will be notified,” he stated.
He further stated if the polls were held today, Mudavadi would go to the polls as the ANC presidential candidate while Ruto would fly the UDA flag.
“As far as we are concerned, DP Ruto is the UDA presidential candidate, and Musalia Mudavadi is the presidential candidate of ANC, in other words we are independent but talking as friends,” Muthama said.
The former Machakos Senator also ruled out claims that power positions had already been shared out among coalition partners.
“Our stand is that democracy takes place either through nominations or issuance of nomination certificates,” he said.
According to Muthama, the coalition has yet to agree on terms, including who will fly its flag at the August polls.
“Nothing has changed, pending discussions in which we will agree on who will be the coalition candidate” he added.
The coalition was created after ANC party leader Musalia promised an earthquake, he has so far been condemned and termed as a betrayer leading to sentiments describing his approach as suicidal.
However, the Kenya Kwanza coalition may be on the verge of a crisis, as some of its leaders are disgruntled, this comes after the pro-UDA allies plot to challenge the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, now law after it was assented to by President Uhuru Kenyatta in court.
ANC leader Mudavadi ruled out Ruto being an automatic flag bearer for the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“We shall eventually name the candidate who will fly the Kenya Kwanza Alliance flag in the elections. Our priority right now is to unite Kenyans and ensure we have a peaceful election,” Mudavadi said.
After joining hands with Ruto a few days ago, the ANC leader does not seem to take a bow for anyone, including DP.
The formation of the coalition was a definite game-changer in Kenyan politics as the general election of 2022 approached.
