Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is targeting to register close to 1000 new voters at Shimo la Tewa GK Prison in the exercise that was rolled out today.
IEBC coordinator in charge of Kisauni constituency where the GK Prison falls under- Aisha Abubakar said they are targeting to register 682 inmates serving in the Main Prison, 208 in the medium prison and another 37 in the women prison all totaling to 927.
She said by yesterday it was yet to be confirmed whether there were eligible inmates to be registered as voters under the Bostal Prison for inmates aged 21 years and below.
“Until now we are not sure if there is anybody to be registered from the Bostal wing unless it is confirmed to us, but in an earlier communication we were told there is nobody to be registered as a voter,” said Abubakar adding that the exercise kicked off well and the prisoners cooperating well.
According to the IEBC chief a number of eligible inmates in the Prisons have waiting cards and are unable to register.
She however noted that the commission has already communicated to the National Registration Bureau to see how the inmates with waiting cards can get their IDs on time and register before the exercise ends on February 27.
