The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital ( MTRH ) Chief Executive Officer Dr Wilson Aruasa has allayed fears that the proposed construction of a new multi-billion shilling teaching and referral hospital in Uasin Gishu County has failed to kick off.
Aruasa clarified that the Sh 28 billion hospital project has now been approved by the national government and that construction work on the 200-acre piece of land is set to commence on January next year.
The government has so far availed Sh 200 million for construction of the first phase of the project which is behind schedule due to long standing legal battle between MTRH and the Kenya Prison Service over ownership of the land.
However the matter was resolved last year after the intervention of National Land Commission which approved the hiving off of 200 acres out of the 618 acre Eldoret GK prison land on the outskirts of Eldoret town paving the way for the construction of a state of art teaching and referral hospital.
Aruasa revealed that the proposed site where the hospital with a capacity of 2,000 bed will be constructed has already been surveyed and demarcated through facilitation of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
