Several people were injured in a stampede at the Likoni crossing channel after police fire in the air to disperse angry ferry commuters who had attempted to force themselves inside one of the vessels.
The incident happened after one of the ferries broke down midstream causing panic among the users and a major human traffic on the Likoni mainland side.
Operations at channel were paralysed for hours as efforts were being made to evacuate passengers inside the Mv Likoni.
According to the Kenya Ferry Services, the breakdown had been caused by engine failure.
KFS managing director Bakari Gowa however said the incident lasted for about 1.45 minutes.
The incident happened at 7.45 am, which is normally the pick hours which attract thousands of commuter’s crossing over to the Island.
