Over 83, 000 residents of Mbeere South Sub County in Embu County are facing hunger and starvation as the drought situation continues to bite in the country.

Youths and Gender affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has distributed over 500 bags of Maize, 111 bags of beans, 300 bags of rice,50 cartons of cooking oil and 10 bales of food for children and the elderly in mbeere south sub county.

Speaking at Kiritiri market during a voter mobilization and food distribution exercise, Kariuki said that the government is looking at other non-food interventions such as survival for animals and also provision of water to the communities affected by the drought.

The CS said that the government is committed in ensuring that nobody will die due to hunger or starvation in the country adding that there is need for long term measures to be put in place to ensure there is food security in the country.

She at the same time called on those distributing the food to prioritize on those highly affected first and then to the rest while at the same time there should be fairness in the distributionof the food.

Kariuki however noted that those who are not in dire need of the food or facing starvation should not get it but instead those facing starvation should be the biggest beneficiaries.

She said that she will liase with the othe departments of the governemnt such as water ministry to see to it that the people of the drought stricken mbeere also get access to water from domestic use.
