The metrological department has warned of floods in Kwale, Mombasa, and part of Kilifi counties starting today Tuesday.
In a warning, the department Monday said heavy rainfall of more than 30mm in 24 hours is expected in various parts of the coast region.
The department said the rains will start from the southern coast on Tuesday and spread out to northern coast by Wednesday.
The weatherman, in a notice copied to the President, Kenya Red Cross, National Disaster Operations, Disaster Management committees, said the heavy downpour may continue to Thursday.
“The rains are likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas near the coastline, river lines, areas near dams and other water repositories,” the agency said.
“Flooding situation may worsen in some parts due to the fact that a lot of water will accumulate on the ground since Tuesday.”
The warning by the department’s director said the flooded water may suddenly appear in places where it hasn’t rained heavily.
