The hearing of a criminal case in which former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel is charged with assaulting his fellow legislator Sara Korere at the Office of the President failed to proceed today at a Nairobi court.
The case was scheduled for hearing before trial Milimani senior resident magistrate Hellen Onkwani, but it could not proceed after defence lawyer James Orengo asked for adjournment, saying prosecution has not supplied them with all copies of witness statements to enable them prepare its defence.
The complainant Korere is now the current MP for Laikipia North after beating Lempurkel in the last general election.
Lempurkel is charged with causing bodily harm to Korere, an offence he allegedly committed on November 21,2016 at Harambee House. The prosecution alleges that Lempurkel willfully and unlawfully assaulted the nominated MP by slapping her on her left cheek and kicking the lower part of her abdomen.
He has since denied the charge and he is out on a cash bail of Sh 100,000.
