The Kipsigis council of elders has urged the government to immediately halt plans for the construction of Itare dam saying it would ruin the ecosystem.
Speaking in Narok Town, the elders stated that the project that is meant to serve a considerable population would in time ruin the major Mau complex water catchment area.
They stated that the south rift region heavily relies on water from Mau and residents will suffer a negative effect if the Dam is constructed.
Led by their secretary Edwin Kimeto the leaders called on the government to involve all stakeholders including NEMA and WARMA to ensure that there are no adverse effects if the dam is constructed.
Kimeto noted that the government had not consulted the relevant stakeholders adding that politicians from the opposition were right in stopping the process.
The elders insisted that if the project is implemented then counties including Narok, Migori,Bomet and Kericho would suffer from water shortage.
