Two people have been confirmed dead after a mine collapsed in Migori County following heavy downpour pounding the area.
According to the area Assistant Chief Dorothy Achieng Olande, investigations have since established that the wall collapsed as a result of the heavy downpour that has since weakened the soil in the mining area.
Olande said 20-year-old Steve Ochieng died when wall collapsed while his colleague Michael Okumu died shortly after being rescued from the mine.
The two miners spent more than 20 hours in the mine before they were retrieved by locals in collaboration with Kenya Red Cross officers.
The county administration has announced a temporary ban on mining activities in some parts of Masara gold mine areas in Suna West sub-County until the soil hardens.
The bodies of the two miners have been taken to Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary.
