Government has seized over a tonne of plastic bags so far in Migori county since the ban took effect.
Major plastic bags users like supermarkets and wholesalers were stuck with huge stock of plastic bags in their stores which they could not use for fear of being arrested.
On Monday, National Environment Management Authority officers while liasing with police officers started to effect the ban on 42 supermarkets across all major towns in the county.
Parnwell Simitu, Nema county director said by Tuesday evening they had seized 1,155kg of plastic bags especially from the supermarkets.
“Many retailers have handed over their stock pile after the public asked for alternative packaging as they were aware of the ban,” Simitu said.
Simitu said so far the compliance across the county is 95 per cent which was positive as most major users have started using alternative materials.
