Tension remains high at Daba City area within Mandera County after tens of heavily armed suspected Al Shabaab militants destroyed a communication mast before burning down a meeting hall in the area.
No one was injured during the Wednesday dawn attack.
However, the assailants are suspected to have had vague idea of heavy police presence in night patrols since the launched the attack and escaped immediately.
Also, the insurgents did not advance to neighbouring villages.
“We have heavy police deployment in the area to go after the attackers. Thee militants retreated immediately after they destroyed the mast.” A senior officer said.
Today, Northern Kenya Regional Coordinator Ambassador Mohamud Saleh was held up in crisis close door meeting with area security commanders deliberating on how to handle the security situation in the area.
The officers are said to be over stretched due to vast area of coverage and expansive Kenya-Somalia border.
The raid comes two days after the militant’s killed two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel in an Improvised Explosive Device (Ied) that blew up their vehicle at Damasa area.
Early this month, a police officer was killed during a dawn raid at Lafey Police Station and an Administration Police Camp by the Al Shabaab insurgents.
They first hurled a Rocket Propelled Grenade and quick succession of indiscriminate shooting while advancing towards the police station.
In a separate incident, the militiamen killed three people at Nyongoro in Witu, Lamu County.
The area is under a dusk to dawn curfew including Mandera Town, Arabia, Fino, Lafey Kotulo and Elwak.
