The disaster in Texas is unfolding on an epic scale, with Houston mostly paralyzed by the storm that has parked itself over the Gulf Coast. With nearly 2 more feet of rain expected on top of the 30-plus inches in some places, authorities are worried the worst might be yet to come.
More than three days after the storm ravaged the state’s coastline as a Category 4 hurricane, authorities had rescued thousands and confirmed only three deaths. But unconfirmed reports of others missing or presumed dead were growing.
In Southwest Louisiana early Tuesday, Tropical Storm Harvey threatened to inundate the region with potentially disastrous flooding. Damage was nothing compared to the toll in Texas, and had been light through sunset Monday. But a heavy band of rainfall Monday night proved too much for some Lake Charles neighborhoods.
