Seven people among them three family members were yesterday killed while sixteen others were left with serious injuries after an inferno destroyed over fifty households in the Majengo area of Kamukunji, Nairobi.
In an update on their social handles, the Kenya Red Cross said they managed to contain the fire as efforts to locate the missing people were initiated together with the Nairobi County Disaster Management team.
“Together with the Nairobi City County Fire Department and community members, we have managed to contain a fire incident in Kitui Village, Majengo, and Nairobi. Around 50 households were affected and sixteen people sustained minor injuries, all of whom were treated by the Kenya Red Cross. The Kenya Red Cross remains on-site, supporting efforts to locate missing persons.” They said in the statement.
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan termed the incident as one deadliest fire incident ever witnessed in the constituency.
“This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Kamukunji. Emergency teams are on the scene, searching the affected area for additional victims. Many of the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.” He said.
The incident comes a day after 50 households in the Mlango Kubwa area of Mathaare lost property of unknown value after a fire outbreak.
The fire was successfully contained through the efforts of an emergency response team led by the Kenya Red Cross.
