Former IEBC Chairperson Issack Hassan has been nominated by president William Ruto as chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) at a time the civilian oversight authority is accused of inefficiency and lost past glory owing to rising police excesses.
If he is approved by parliament, he will replace Anne Makori.
Hassan will serve together with other seven board members also nominated today.
The seven board members include; Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Micah Onyiego Nyakego, Boniface Kipkemoi Samati, Annette Mbogoh, John Muchiri Nyaga, Kenwilliams Nyakomitah, and Jackline Lukalo Mwenesi.
Hassan is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 30 years of experience as a legal practitioner and consultant in various countries including Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Namibia, and Afghanistan.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B) from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and a Diploma in Contemporary Public Administration Management from Galilee International Management Institute, Israel.
Apart from IPOA, Ruto has also nominated Sammy Chepkwony to take over as the new Salaries and Renumation Commission Chair set to replace Lyn Mengich.
Chepkwony is the current Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at People Centric Management Limited.
Previously, he served as a consultant at the PriceWaterHouse Coopers (PWC) Kenya.
He has held various senior positions as Chairperson at Tata Chemicals Magadi Provident Fund, Human Resources Director at Kenya Airways Ltd, James Finlay Kenya Ltd and Human Resource Manager at Nairobi Bottlers Ltd.
Also nominated to SRC are retired Major General Martin Kizito Ong’oyi, CBS (Nominee of the Defence Council), Mohamed Aden Abdi (Nominee of the Senate on behalf of County Governments), Jane Gatakaa Njage (Nominee of TSC) and Leonid Ashindu (Nominee of the Association of Professional Societies in East Africa (APSEA).
Others are Gilda Odera (Nominee of the Federation of Kenya Employers and Dr Geoffrey Apollo Omondi (Nominee of COTU).
Musician Charles Njagua Kanyi alias Jaguar and Dorothy Jemator Kimengech have also been named as members of the commission.
Meanwhile, the President nominated Gerald Nyaoma Arita as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Kenya.
Nyaoma has previously held various positions within the Central Bank of Kenya, including: Director, Financial Markets Development; Director, Banking Services; Director, Bank Supervision Department; Acting Director, Internal Audit Department; Senior Manager, National Payment Services Division; and Assistant Branch Manager, Mombasa Branch, among others.
