The fugitive prime suspect implicated in the gruesome macabre killings of three ladies, a woman, her daughter and her niece in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area has been seized and identified as an Ethiopian ex-security agent Hashim Dagane Muhumed aged 24 years.
Today, a speialised team attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked Muhumed to his hideout in Eastleigh.
Preliminary police findings also show that Muhumed once worked as a police officer in Ethiopia and was arrested and jailed for killing his wife.
It remains unclear how he later managed to flee to Kenya and find a safe haven Nairobi’s Eatleigh where he started a taxi business.
Detective believe that the taxi business could be a camouflage and are investigating whether he is linked to other organized criminal activities.
“Detectives have successfully apprehended Hashim Dagane Muhumed today after an extensive investigation into the tragic murders of a mother, her daughter, and her 12-year-old niece. The horrifying crime prompted a determined manhunt for the suspect. Muhumed is currently in police custody, where he is undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment scheduled for tomorrow at the Makadara Chief Magistrates Court.” DCI said through a post on their official X handle.
He has been on the run for the last twelve days. He is currently booked at Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi.
The DCI sleuths also tracked down Muhumed’s mother to a refugee camp in Kenya.
Detectives had initially suspected that Muhumed had left Kenya and even extended their manhunt to neighbouring Somalia and Ethiopia.
Investigations revealed that Muhumed was the driver of the Nissan Note that was captured on CCTV cameras picking up the victims from their Eastleigh home on October 21, hours before their bodies were discovered at different locations.
The vehicle was found abandoned at the Wakulima Market, near the ENA Coach stage, and towed to the DCI headquarters for forensic examination.
Detectives have said the three could have been killed following a dispute over ransom, adding that the abductors became violent after realising that the victims had positively identified them.
Muhumed is accused of killing Amina Abdirashid Dahir (38), her daughter Waris Dahabo Daud (22), and her niece Nusayba Abdi Mohammed (13) on October 21, 2024.
They were buried at the Lang’ata cemetery in Nairobi.
They were reportedly murdered for failing to pay the demanded ransom and for identifying the kidnappers while in captivity.
A suspect and a survivor have told police the killers had demanded ransom from the women before turning on them.
Muhumed is said to have contacted a relative of the victims in London demanding ransom but the relative dismissed him, and this angered him.
“Investigations conducted so far have established that Hashim Dagane, 24, was driving the Nissan Note (Reg. No. KDQ 718Y) car captured on CCTV cameras picking the victims from their Eastleigh home on October 21, 2024, hours before their bodies were discovered scattered at various locations. The vehicle was also found abandoned at Wakulima Market near Ena Coach stage and towed to DCI Headquarters for forensic examination, further linking Hashim Dagane to the killings.” The DCI said in a post on their X official handle.
One suspect was arrested as he tried to escape, and he is believed to have taken ransom of Sh1million from a woman who survived the kidnapping.
