Some 13,000 City Hall employees are expected to start receiving their July salaries today following a meeting with Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko.
Sonko said after a meeting with the Kenya County Government Workers Union officials that the salaries will be paid in two days.
“I promised that the said salaries shall be paid within the next 48 hours,” he said.
The meeting was also attended by chief county Finance officer Lukas Gatimu.
Union branch secretary Boniface Waweru said they have been informed the National Treasury has released the money which stands at Sh1.3 billion.
“We were told the controller of budget had not approved the disbursement of the money, that is what caused the delay,” he said.
“But we are now told the money has been approved and by evening today, we should start receiving it,” Waweru added.
In a gazette notice on Tuesday, Sonko also moved quickly to assure contractors and suppliers that they will receive pending payments as soon as he is sworn in.
