The Inspector General (IG) of Police Japheth Koome has reiterated a chorus of stern warning to emboldened bandits who have continued to reign terror on helpless civilians in the volatiule North Rift region despite sustained security operation in the area.
Speaking yesterday in Kabarnet during a comprehensive security assessment tour of Baringo County where he addressed concerns over the escalating threat posed by criminal elements, Koome said the criminals will face full force of the law if they persist with their gangland style.
“Let me be unequivocal: whether these attacks stem from inter-community conflicts, collaboration among criminal groups, or targeted assaults on security personnel, the message to the perpetrators is clear – cease your activities or face the full brunt of the law.” Koome said.
The IG visited the troubled region following public criticism from lawmakers who accused him of failing to manage the crisis.
The warning follows a series of violent incidents in several counties, including Baringo, Isiolo, Samburu, and Meru, which have left communities devastated and resulted in loss of lives and property.
Of particular concern are recent attacks in Saimo Soi Ward, Baringo County, and Morijo in Samburu Central Sub County, which have led to the displacement of residents and forced the closure of educational institutions.
In addition to rampant banditry, cattle rustlers have intensified their assaults on ranches and conservancies in Isiolo and Meru counties, exacerbating the security crisis in the region.
Despite the government’s designation of six counties – Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu – as “disturbed” areas, criminal elements have continued to operate with impunity, posing a grave threat to the safety and well-being of citizens.
To address the escalating security challenges, Koome revealed that the government has established a multi-agency command center for Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia, and Samburu, in addition to the existing Chemolingot Multi-Agency Operation Centre.
He is on a three-day security assessment tour of Baringo County in response to the escalating wave of banditry attacks across several regions including Isiolo, Samburu, and Meru Counties.
He said additional resources, including sophisticated equipment and Formed Police Units, have been deployed to affected areas as part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift.
Despite the daunting task ahead, Koome commended security personnel for their dedication and patriotism, urging them to uphold their constitutional mandate impartially and without fear.
“We applaud our security forces for their unwavering commitment to duty. They must continue to discharge their responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.” He stated.
The IG has urged locals to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in the fight against banditry and criminality.
“The support and cooperation of the public are essential in our efforts to root out these criminal elements,” he emphasised. Together, we can restore peace and security to our communities and safeguard the future of our nation.” He added.
