Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said scientific research conducted by line institutions under his docket has shown accidents are more rampant along unconstructed murram roads as opposed to tarmacked roads.
He attributed the surge in road carnages to road indiscipline by users.
He stated that disregard to traffic rules such as overloading as the cardinal cause of road accidents that continue to claim lives of Kenyan road users.
“We know that boda boda should carry one person and the passenger should put on a helmet. But some people insist on being carried five people sometimes with their entire family members on the same bodo boda. We continue to lose lives because of such.” Murkomen said.
He called on Kenyans to uphold collective responsibility in order to ensure that the country doesn’t witness more loss of lives through road accidents.
“Responsibility starts with those who are going to have the highest impacts of those accidents, which is you the passenger.” The CS added.
The Transport CS in a separate communique shared on his X account maintained that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) are embarking on a nationwide traffic enforcement aimed at educating citizens on road safety protocols.
He reiterated his stance on bringing careless drivers to justice. His statement comes against the backdrop of the death of two people following an accident involving an oil tanker and a bus along the Busia-Kisumu highway over the weekend.
The accident which also left scores injured was blamed on lane indiscipline by the oil trailer.
