The Ministry of Health has scheduled a meeting with health workers’ unions this Tuesday in a bid to avert a looming doctors’ strike.
Principal Secretary (PS) for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni said the meeting will discuss issues raised by doctors among them claims of delayed posting of intern doctors in the country.
Among the key issues to be discussed in the meeting include doctor’s calls for immediate posting of over 1,000 intern doctors and medical officers.
Last week, doctor’ union, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) announced that they will commence a nationwide strike beginning today to demand for the absorption of medical interns by the health ministry and against what they termed as an assassination attempt on the Secretary General of KMPDU Devji Atellah
Kenya Medical association chair Marion Diana has urged the Ministry of Health to resolve the issue of internship postings for new doctors.
Dr. Attella was leading a peaceful demonstration addressing crucial issues within the healthcare sector, including the delayed posting of medical interns and the payment of fees for postgraduate students.
The PS has reassured the country that her ministry is keen to resolve all concerns raised by the health workers’ union in the country for the betterment of the health sector.
PS Muthoni made the remarks after attending a Sunday service at the priesthood ministries church in Kahawa West, Nairobi county.
