Tanzania’s former Prime Minister Edward Ngoyai Lowasa died yesterday night, ending an era of a political career that fell short of the presidency.
Lowassa died at the Jakaya Heart Institute in Dar es Salaam aged 70.
Vice President Dr Philip Mpango announced his death on Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).
Tanzania President Samia Suluhu mourned him as a great leader who devoted himself to the service of the country.
She declared five days of national mourning during which flags will fly at half-mast in his honour.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa described Lowassa as a great and steadfast leader who served diligently in all the positions held.
“I join the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan to mourn following the death of the former Prime Minister Edward Ngoyai Lowassa. Our country has lost a legend. I send my condolences to the family and the people of Tanzania.” Kassim said.
Mpango said Lowassa had suffered a myriad of conditions including lung issues, stomach ulcers, and hypertension.
His career as prime minister started from 2005 to 2008 under former president Jakaya Kikwete.
However, numerous scandals eventually forced him to step down, leading him to tender his resignation.
Following his resignation, Kikwete dissolved his cabinet as required by the Constitution and formed a new one under a new prime minister Mizengo Pinda.
In 2015, Lowassa defected from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to the main opposition camp which had formed a coalition, where he launched an unsuccessful presidential bid against the late former President John Magufuli.
On March 1, 2019, Lowassa left Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) and rejoined CCM.
Lowassa’s final days were marked by a noticeable hiatus from the spotlight, with unfounded speculation rising from time to time about his health.
President William Ruto mourned former Lowassa as a respected and progressive leader.
Ruto said Lowassa was a leader who “worked for the greater good of the people of Tanzania and the East African Region.”
“We honour the distinguished life that he led, his work and the rich legacy that he leaves behind.” Ruto said.
“May God grant the family, President Suluhu Samia and the people of The United Republic of Tanzania strength at this moment of grief. Buriani Ndugu Lowassa.” Ruto added.
