The Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says he is ready to pay the political price for spearheading eradication of illicit brew in the country.
Speaking this morning when hosted members of Nyandarua County Assembly at his Official Karen Residence, the Deputy President lauded the leadership of the County Assembly for a great milestone in the fight against illicit brew.
Nyandarua County Assembly is the first to pass a Bill to support the renewed fight against illicit alcoholic drinks, drugs and substance abuse spearheaded by the Deputy President.
The Nyandarua County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2023, gives the much needed boost to the fight against illicit brew.
Anchoring the fight against illicit brew in law provides clarity on penalties to be faced by those found in contravention.
The DP says members of the county assembly have displayed an immense interest and determination in true service to the people by enacting a people-centered law against the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illicit brews and has called on other leaders from the region and across the country to follow suit.
The legislation proposes that a Drinks Regulation Committee be established in every sub-county to receive & vet applications for retail and wholesale license. It also outlines penalties for anyone found manufacturing, producing, selling or distributing Alcoholic beverages without a licence issued in accordance with the Act among others.
The Deputy President emphasised the government’s commitment in overseeing the success of the fight, saying that illicit brew has played a key role in impoverishing a substantial number of youth.
