KeNHA reopen Nairobi Garissa highway after works restoration following cut-off by floods

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reopened the temporary damaged Nairobi-Garissa Highway after closure following c by floods causeut-off caused by the ongoing El Nino rains.

The road had collapsed at Kona Punda along the Madogo-Mororo stretch.

The roads agency announced yesterday that the work was completed and the road opened for traffic.

KeNHA restored the road after it collapsed at Kona Punda along the Madogo-Mororo stretch.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority is pleased to inform the public that the last washout at Kona Punda and Mororo in Madogo has now been successfully addressed. This has enabled traffic flow along Madogo – Garissa (A3) Road. Effectively, motorists can now move from Nairobi to Garissa, all the affected sections having been restored.” The statement by KeNHA read in part.

Further, the authority encouraged traders to take advantage of the free flow of traffic and supply the residents of the Garisa and the surrounding areas as the residents have been without essential supplies for some time following the road cut-off occasioned by flooding.

They added that the KeNHA team will remain on the ground to monitor and alert of any new developments as they ensure seamless connectivity along the entire stretch.

The deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is expected to inspect the road on Monday and later visit displacement camps in Ziwani, Bakayu, and Bulabaraka.

Also, KeNHA has maintained that the Garsen-Witu-Lamu (A7) will remain closed due to flooding from the ongoing El Nino rains.

They announced that the Kenya Coast Guard (KCG) has provided boats that will help pedestrians to cross the road.

“Pedestrians are now between the two points, Gamba and Lango la Simba. The road is still completely submerged in the affected section” the roads agency said on Sunday.

KeNHA said the road closure followed heavy rainfall which led River Tana to burst

KeNHA appealed to motorists to continue halting their travel until water levels subside and an assessment is done to ascertain if the road is passable.
