The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for the immediate arrest of Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya for allegedly threatening Kakamega Small Claims Court Resident Magistrate Gladys Kiama for ruling against him in a case and ordered him to pay a Sh500, 000 fine.
LSK have condemned the attack against the judicial officers and now they want the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to move with speed and apprehend the MP.
“The Judiciary plays a pivotal role in upholding justice and any attempts at interference with its independence is a matter of grave concern This call for immediate legal action is crucial to send an unequivocal and strong message that threats against judicial officers will not be tolerated in our democratic society.” LSK president Erick Theuri said in a statement.
Yesterday, in a dramatic turn of events, the comic MP took to the social media flaunting Sh500,000 in cash and asked his debtors to collect it from his office amid a stand-off with a Kakamega-based businessman.
In a now viral video, the MP is seen bullishly telling the claimant to collect his dues as he downplayed the said debt and criticized the recent ruling that ordered him to pay businessman Robert Lutta the said amount with interest.
According to Salasya who is no stranger to the limelight for his tendentious acts, the ruling was aimed at tarnishing his political name in the region.
He slammed his critics saying he would not be cowed and that he is not bothered by the ongoing surrounding the case.
Salasya is alleged to have made a death threat to the resident magistrate Gladys Kiama who ordered him to pay the debt he owed to Robert Lutta with an interest and cost of the case.
The businessman filed a case challenging Salasya to repay him the money that he borrowed last year in December with an agreement to pay in two months but he is yet to pay a year later.
A police report seen by The Informer Media Group where the report was made in Kakamega indicated that the legislator threatened the magistrate before taking off immediately.
“He (Salasya) confronted her outside the courtroom and threatened to kill her and then took off”. The report read in part.
During Monday’s hearing, the MP denied borrowing money from the businessman and instead claimed he was the one who loaned Lutta Sh1million through his political advisor Bernard Kemba.
But Magistrate Kiama dismissed Salasya’s argument due to lack of evidence.
“I also note that there was nothing to support the allegations that the claimant borrowed money from the respondent, there was no evidence to support his claim.” she said.
Currently, investigations are on to arrest the first-term MP who is on the run after the incident.
