Athletics Kenya is set to name a provisional team that will represent Kenya at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
As the preparations for the global showpiece begin, Nairobi regional Athletics Kenya chairman Barnabas Korir said the names will be released together with their substitutes.
He said that they want it before mid-December they will be done and everything set.
“Within this week or next week or next week, Athletics Kenya will announce the team that will be competing at the Paris Olympics. The names that will be released are those that will be going to compete and the substitutes in case any problem arises.” Korir said.
The AK official revealed that the organization is in talks with double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge and the current record holder Kelvin Kiptum to be in the men’s team.
“We are in talks with the top athletes such as Kipchoge and Kiptum and the rest. They have shown interest and they want to compete I can confirm we have enough athletes.” He added.
A showdown between Kipchoge and Kiptum could present a tasty encounter after the latter broke Kipchoge’s record after clocking 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon back in October 2023.
The women’s team is poised to have the Olympic and double world half marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir as she has expressed interest.
The Olympic champion is set to take part in the inaugural Chepsaita Cross-Country run as she gears up for selection.
Kenya will also be represented in the Paris by Rugby Sevens men’s side Kenya Shujaa as well as women’s volleyball side Malkia Strikers who both earned direct qualification to next year’s Olympics.
