Police officers in Siaya have recovered the two firearms that were lost during a recent shootout that left one officer dead and another seriously injured.
The MP5 and the AK47 riffles were recovered at Hawinga in a residential house.
The two main suspects of the said incident were shot dead during the recovery by the officers while the owner of the said house where they were found identified as Sheikh Rashid managed to escape.
“NPS Officers have recovered the two firearms lost this week where one NPS Officer was killed and the other seriously injured while escorting KCSE papers to Mahero Secondary School in Siaya County. The MP5 and AK47 Rifle were recovered at Hawinga from the house of Sheikh Rashid who escaped the police dragnet, while two suspects were fatally wounded. The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to serve and to protect.”
During the incident, one officer was killed and the other was left with serious injuries after they were attacked by unidentified assailants while escorting Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to Mahero Secondary School in Alego, Siaya county, and their two official rifles were stolen.
The officers were walking to the exam centre after being dropped off by a bus near the school when the assailants accosted them from behind.
However, the exam centre managers ran for their safety while the officers were struggling with the suspected thugs.
The KCSE Geography Paper One which was to be done at the school went on successfully after the teacher managed to reach the school.
