One officer was killed and the other was left with serious injuries after they were attacked by unidentified assailants while escorting Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to Mahero Secondary School in Alego, Siaya county and their two official rifles stolen.
The thugs escaped with the firearms of the officers, an AK47 rifle and an MP5.
According to a police sources who spoke to The Informer Media Group, the officers were walking to the exam centre after being dropped off by a bus near the school when the assailants accosted them from behind.
However, the exam centre managers ran for their safety while the officers were struggling with the suspected thugs.
“They were attacked from behind by two men dressed in heavy jackets while one of them had an Arafat shawl and the other had a face mask and both were armed with knives. They escaped with the officer’s firearms; AK47 and MP5.” A preliminary police investigation report read in part.
Confirming the incident, Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno called for patience as investigations begin into the matter to establish who the attackers were and what their motive could be but appealed to members of the public to volunteer information that can lead to their arrest.
The injured officer was rushed to Siaya Referral Hospital while the deceased body was moved to the same hospital.
Investigations are on to arrest the suspects as the police recovered a dust coat and two knives from the crime scene.
The KCSE Geography Paper One which was to be done at the school went on successfully after the teacher managed to reach the school.
Siaya Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich has assured that security will be intensified to ensure all the remaining papers are also done uninterrupted.
