The Azimio la Umoja Coalition party in a joint action with the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) have reversed a decision by Garissa County Assembly to change the leadership of the county assembly’s Majority Party in favour of the ruling party.
Reacting on the same, Abubakar Mohamed Khalif claimed that on September 3, 2023, errant members of the party intent on defeating the course of justice, democracy and citizen representation in Garissa County Assembly purported to make changes to the leadership in the house.
“This appealing state of affairs was orchestrated when the Leader of Majority travelled out of the country on official House Duties. The errant members of the coalition through the back-door presented their names to the speaker seeing a declaration on change of leadership. We wish to applaud the Azimio Coalition for taking the matter seriously and communicating to the speaker that there was, there is no change in the House Leadership yet.” Khalif said.
In a letter dated Septembrer 7, 2023 addressed to the Garissa County Assembly Speaker Abdi Idle Gure, Azimio Secretary General Junet Mohamed cited a September 3, 2023 communication to the County Speaker purporting a change of guard at the Office of the Majority Party.
“It has been brought to our attention of a communication dated September 3, 2023 and received in your office on September 5, 2023 purporting to change the leadership of the Majority Party/Coalition in the Garissa County Assembly.” The letter to the Speaker’s office read in part.
Denying knowledge or approval of such changes, the Azimio Secretary General asked the Garissa County Assembly to revert to the status quo.
“While the office of the Secretary General attempts to ascertain the propriety or otherwise of the actions taken, we urge that the status quo ante be reverted to immediately.”
The Azimio letter, copied to Garissa County Assembly Clerk, Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Majority Whip and a member of the Public Service Board read in part.
In the same vein, a Nairobi City court document citing Case No. PPDT/E017 2023 filed by Abubakar Mohamed Khalif and Abdi Ibrahim Daar versus the Applicants, the PPDT’s Honourable Justice Desma Nungo ordered that the Notice of Motion Application is certified as urgent, be served upon respondents and interested parties within two days of the date thereof, and that the respondents and interested parties file their responses to the Application within five days.
