The University of Nairobi has announced that staff salaries for the month of July, 2023 will be delayed due to circumstances beyond control of the administration even as the varsity is plunged in a leadership feud that saw Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama sent on a six months’ sabbatical.
Effectively, Professor Julius A. Ogeng’o has been appointed as the VC in an acting capacity.
Yesterday, through an internal memo, the university administration announced that they are working to resolve the salary delays expeditiously.
“We are writing this letter to extend our heartfelt apologies to our esteemed staff for the delay in payment of July 2023 salaries”. A circular issued by the Vice Chancellor said.
Ogeng’o noted that the delay was caused by circumstances beyond control of the university administration and urged the staff to be patient in the meantime.
“The delay was due to circumstances beyond our control. As a caring organisation, we are working towards resolving the matter expeditiously so that your salaries are paid soon”, the Vice Chancellor said.
Professor Ogeng’o was appointed by the Council of the University to act for six months beginning August 1, 2023.
A professor of Human Anatomy, he is substantively the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs and also the Director of the Centre for Self Sponsored programmes at the University of Nairobi.
The DVC Academic Affairs was appointed to discharge the duties of the Office of the Vice Chancellor in acting capacity effective August 1, 2023
His appointment followed the approval by the Council of the Vice Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama’s request to proceed on leave until end of January 2024.
Kiama who served as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Human Resource was appointed Vice Chancellor on January 5, 2020 to serve for a period of a five-year term that will end in 2025.
