Barely eight months into president William Ruto’s reign, leaders from Ukambani have already started drumming up support for their own to ascend to the coveted seat come 2027.
The leaders, led by Makueni senator Daniel Maanzo, seemed to speak in unison in support of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the top seat in the next General Election which is more than four years away.
The leaders view Musyoka as the best bet not only for the region but also for the country to face off with William Ruto in the 2027 elections, saying he (Musyoka) had supported Odinga enough and that it was time for Baba to pronounce his support for him
The Ukambani leaders had accompanied their perceived kingpin to a church service over the weekend where they said the time for his jab at the presidency had come.
“This time round we are saying it is Musyoka. We have done it thrice with Odinga, now let us have him support our party leader.” Maanzo said.
On his part, Kitui Rural Member of Parliament David Mboni echoed Maanzo’s take, saying that it was time for Odinga to throw his weight behind Musyoka for the presidency come 2027.
“We have supported Raila thrice and we are now saying it is time he seriously considers his support for Kalonzo. As a region, we know where our support will be come 2027, and we want him (Odinga) to return the favour.” Mboni said.
It is not the first time the issue of Kalonzo running in 2027 is coming up. Six months ago, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua declared Kalonzo Musyoka as the best candidate to contest for the 2027 presidential election on the Azimio la Umoja ticket.
“Kalonzo Musyoka is the best presidential candidate for the Azimio coalition in 2027.” Wambua said then.
Meanwhile, as the battle for the 2027 general election takes shape, a Wiper governor has alleged that Raila Odinga and former president Uhuru Kenyatta will support Kalonzo.
According to Wambua, Kalonzo has the experience to lead the country, arguing that Raila and Uhuru ought to reward him for being loyal.
Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi is also on record rooting for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to succeed Azimio leader Raila Odinga in the national political arena. He once said Kalonzo should be the Azimio la Umoja flag bearer in the 2027 general elections.
“I think Kalonzo Musyoka is a worthy successor to Hon Raila Odinga as Azimio’s leader and torch bearer for 2027 and beyond.” The seasoned lawyer had tweeted.
