Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga charged for being sect adherent, released on Sh50,000 cash bail
The former leader of the dreaded proscribed Mungiki sect cum politician Maina Njenga was today charged before a Nakuru Court with seven counts related to the outlawed sect.
However, he denied all the charges when he appeared before Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelyon and was released on a conditional bond of Sh100,000 with an alternative of Sh50,000.
During the tense court session, tens of armed police officers were stations along different roads leading to the law courts.
Maina had a battalion of six lawyers among them Martha Karua, George Wajackoya, Ndgwa Njiru, Orlale Cheche and Simon Mbugua.
Also present in court were former Muranga Governor, Mwangi wa Iria, former Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa and ousted Jubilee Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni.
Maina unsuccessfully vied for the Laikipia Senatorial seat in the last general elections.
He was charged with being a member of an unuthorised group namely Mungiki, having records relating to the group and addressing an illegal meeting at his home in Wanyoro area of Bahati Sub-County in Nakuru.
He is said to have committed the offences between May 11 and 12 2023 together with 11 others not before court.
The 11 were charged on May 9, 2023.
The other charge stated that he attended the said illegal meeting, allowed the meeting to take place at his home and provided his premise for the meeting.
The court restrained him from making statements relating to the matter in court or contacting the prosecution witnesses failure to which the bond would be cancelled.
The matter will be mentioned on June 20, 2023 for direction.
