The controversial Bungoma based priest Eliud Wekesa, alias Yesu wa Tongaren, has been set free by a Bungoma court today morning after prosecution said they have no evidence against him.
He was arrested and detained last week before being presented in court.
Wekesa, leader of New Jerusalem Church, spent five days in police cell as detectives investigated alleged offences against him including cult activities.
He was accused of running a religious cult in Tongaren, purporting to be Jesus Christ, teaching radical ideologies to his followers, some of whom are minors, as well as practising and promoting money laundering.
Wekesa was set free even as the country continues to be treated to bizarre deaths and killings at the ShakaholaForest in Kilifi county linked to controversial pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and pastor Ezekiel Odero.
Already, president William Ruto formed a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe the Shakahola cult deaths.
Similarly, Court of Appeal Lady Justice Jessie Lessit led commission of inquiry was sworn in last week.
