Kisumu governor Anyang Nyong’o has indefinitely suspended the anti-governmental protests called for by the Azimio One Kenya coalition in the county.
According to the governor, the decision was arrived after detailed consultations with the Azimio National leadership and that the County Executive Committee has since been communicated to the Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
“The people of Kisumu remain committed to the aspirations of Azimio La Umoja and its campaign for a better Kenya,” he stated.
He however said that the protesters will join the demonstrations in Nairobi.
He assured that Kisumu remains committed to the aspirations of the Azimio coalition and its campaign for a better country.
Kenyans from various parts of the country including residents of Kisumu county joined demonstrations against the government over the high cost of living and electoral fraud as alleged by the opposition leader.
The demos in Kisumu on Monday left one dead after police opened fire during running battles with demonstrators.
Yesterday, the African Union Commission chairperson called for dialogues between President William Ruto and Raila in order to promote calm and restraint amid the heightened protests.
AU chairperson Moussa Faki urged stakeholders to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation.
“AU expresses deep concern at violence following public protests in Kenya since March 21, 2023, which resulted in the loss of life, damage to property and the interruption of certain economic activities in Nairobi,” he stated.
