Five presidential candidates including opposition leader Raila Odinga boycotted the National Prayer meeting which was graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
President Uhuru, Ekuro Aukot (Thirdway Alliance Kenya and Prof Michael Wainana (Independent) attended a Church service organized by the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya to pray for peace in Kenya.
The prayer service held at Uhuru Park was attended by representatives of many Churches and their followers.
Raila opted to hold his own prayers held at the Okoa Kenya headquarters and gave no reason for boycotting the occasion.
During the prayer service, President Kenyatta read a pledge promising to promote peace before, during and after the election.
“I Uhuru Kenyatta being a Kenyan citizen do hereby pledge to be a peaceful person, to promote and maintain peace, during the campaigns, the elections and after the elections. I will use all the power at my disposal to ensure that true peace reigns in this Nation. Oh help me God to fulfill this solemn vow.
Blessed are the Peace Makers for they shall be called the children of God,” said the President in the pledge.
Bishop Mark Kariuki who led the prayers, said the church will take the prayers to all parts of the country.
“We will saturate this country with prayers. We will pray for peace during and after the elections and that God gives as the leader he himself has anointed,” said Bishop Kariuki.
