Nairobi County Assembly Members (MCAs) yesterday called for a special sitting to discuss the privatization of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC).
Water and Sanitation Committee chairman Alex Otieno has written to Speaker Alex Magelo requesting for a meeting to discuss the unrest characterized by the privatization.
“There is a problem facing the water company that has resulted to an industrial unrest. This is to request you office to approve the committee 10 days request to investigate the matter and report back to the assembly,”a letter dated July 6 read in parts.
Workers of the firm have boycotted work for the last one week claiming there is a plot by the county government to privatize the state corporation. They have cited political interference in the firm’s management.
The Kenya County Government Workers Union branch secretary Matilda Kimetto said the NWSC board has terminated contracts of two “performing directors to destabilize the firm, and use it as an excuse to privatise the organisation.”
“We are picketing because of the political interference with the organization. We are opposed to unwarranted termination of contracts,” she said.
The board did not renew contracts of Steven Mbugua (commercial director) and Johnston Ngandu (financial director), which expired this month, leading to the go slow.
Kimetto alleged they intercepted an MOU between the Board of management and SUEZ Company from France detailing the take over.
