Lewis Otieno Omondi and Fwaro Makokha emerged the top students in this year’s Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) after they both scored 431 marks out of 500.
Lewis attended St. Peters Mumias Boys Primary School in Kakamega county while Fwaro was a student at the Christ the King Primary School in Bungoma.
While releasing the results yesterday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu observed that the mark of the highest candidate rose from 428 in 2021 to 431 this year.
“We are very impressed with the KCPE examinations class of 2022 for performing well and raising the standards of the main performance,” Machogu said.
“In the overall performance of the 2022 KCPE examination the overall performance improved compared to that of 2021. The mark of the highest candidate rose four points from 428 to 431 in 2022,” Machogu added.
Noting an improvement on this year’s performance, Machogu added that some 9,443 learners scored at least 400 marks and above.
A total of 307,756 pupils scored 300-399 marks, accounting for 24 per cent of the candidates while 619, 593 learners got 200-299 marks.
Machogu revealed that a total of 620,965 candidates were boys accounting for 50.32 per cent of total candidates, while 612,887 candidates were girls, representing 49.7 per cent of students who sat for their exams.
Unlike previous years, the CS did not mention the names of the top KCPE candidates to avoid what he termed as “unnecessary competition”.
The KCPE exam was undertaken alongside the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for candidates in Grade Six.
