The Mount Kenya University (MKU) yesterday marked the 22nd graduation ceremony presided over by the East Africa Community Secretary General Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki at the Thika Main Campus.
University Chancellor Professor John Struthers and MKU Founder and Chairman of Board of Directors, Professor Simon Gicharu was also present.
Thousands of graduands were accorded different conferment including Doctorate, Masters degree, bachelor degrees, Diplomas and certificates.
They include six Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degrees, 275) Masters Degrees, 147 Postgraduate Diplomas, 3,058 Bachelor Degrees, 782 Diplomas and 232 Certificates.
Professor Gicharu treasured a number of success stories at MKU notably resilient student recruitment, monitoring of student progression and their completion rates.
Professor Gicharu also singled out research output, total adherence to the quality standards and quality assurance, promotion of innovations which has attracted funded research including donor support in equipment supply, engagement of strategic partnerships and seamless students’ welfare.
“To our graduands, we are aware that, the choice of Mount Kenya University as your University of choice was a decision which involved the entire family including your parents and guardians… We are proud to be part and parcel of your success as we look forward to your excelling,” Gicharu said.
Professor Gicharu applauded EAC Secretary General Dr. Peter Mathuki for gracing the event expressing optimism in Mathuki to help unlock the opportunities existing in the East African Community not only in educational areas but also in other areas of investment in various fields.
In partnership with the Ministry of ICT, MKU has been offering Ajira Digital Skills Training and several students have benefited from the program which has greatly assisted the students compete favorably for online job opportunities.
“It gives us great pleasure to welcome you all to the MKU 22nd graduation. We acknowledge with gratitude the support accorded to the graduands by their parents, guardians, sponsors and staff, among others, during their studies.” The V.C. Prof Deo Jaganyi said.
Struthers expressed gratitude and congratulated the graduates for the job well done as he wished and expressed confidence in their success.
“We congratulate you all and believe you are going to make us proud out there… We pray and hope that success be your only portion as you embark on actualizing your career goals in the job market that lies ahead of you,” observed Struthers.
Mathuki recognised MKU for commanding presence in a number East African countries including Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi with intentions to step foot in both Uganda and Somalia.
“MKU being the largest private university in East and Central Africa; That is the way to go. Let me congratulate MKU for having been bestowed upon the responsibility of serving as the United Nations academic impact up for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 10 on reduced inequalities. This is an achievement which comes with a lot of responsibilities but also expectations on what the university ought to institutionalise to achieve this,” Mathuki observed.
Mathuki commended the university for having implemented programs that support all the SDGs 2030 which he argued that by so doing contributes quite well towards ending inequalities through capacity building in Health Sciences in Education, ICT, Engineering, Energy Production, Gender, Person living with disabilities and many others which contribute immensely in the achievement of SDGs 2030.
Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa who is also the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Transport Committee and Mombasa County Commissioner John Otieno were among the graduands
