The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has offered a sigh of relief to thousands of unemployed trained tutors following yesterday’s announcement of 35,550 teaching vacancies in primary and secondary schools.
The mass recruitment is expected to help contain the teachers’ shortage with a total of 114,581 teachers’ deficit nationwide, TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia said.
A total of 25,550 of the teachers will be interns and 10,000 set to be hired on permanent pensionable basis.
“The Teachers Service Commission invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)” part of the statement read.
Among the opportunities that were advertised include 9,000 vacancies on permanent and pensionable terms of service for secondary school teachers with 1,000 positions set for the primary school counterparts.
TSC also declared vacant 4,000 primary school openings and 21,550 junior secondary school positions for the tutors seeking internships.
The employment of teachers is in accordance with a presidential mandate that President William Ruto issued in mid-October, 2022.
Through a notice dated October 13, 2022, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the government was planning to hire 30,000 teachers for the academic year beginning in January 2023 as the first phase of absorbing more than 116,000 teachers to close the teacher shortage. This action was thought to be what sparked TSC’s announcement.
“The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the TSC will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC,” read part of the statement
President Ruto regime intends to collaborate with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to repair school facilities, according to a statement released during the first Cabinet meeting.
During the annual World Teachers Day festivities in early October, the CEO Nancy Macharia hinted that 14,460 new teachers would be hired and deployed across the nation after the Treasury allocated Sh3.7 billion to hire teachers and fill the gap left by the learners’ 100 per cent CBC switch.
The CEO stated that 5,000 secondary school instructors would be hired for Sh2.5 billion while elementary school teachers would be hired for Sh1.5 billion.
