The government has embarked on an ambitious programme to register all people aged 70 years and above, who will then be enrolled in the Cash Transfer programme, Labour Cabinet secretary Phyllis Kandie has said.
Noting that the Jubilee administration is committed in protecting the interests of the older members of the society, Mrs Kandie said that the registration exercise will start on July 3 and will be conducted by chiefs at the village level.
Speaking at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru where she presided over the World day of the Elderly, the cabinet secretary said that the government had set aside huge chunk of money towards the Cash Transfer programme.
President Kenyatta has given us a directive that all old people be listed so that they can benefit from this programme and live a dignified life, she said.
“This is a government that cares for the elderly and we will ensure that the challenges you are facing are resolved as soon as possible,” Kandie said.
She said that the new programme will take effect from January 8. At the same time, Mrs Kandie said that the government is going to streamline the National Hospital Insurance Fund cover for the elderly to ensure that they, too, benefit from free health care.
