There is growing condemnation against government over the controversial lifting of the ban barring importation of the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is into the country even as the President William Ruto led administration maintain a hardline stance on the issue.
Besides opposition leader Raila Odinga, political leaders, the church and lobby groups, lawyer Miguna Miguna has termed the move as “irresponsible and reckless.
The opposing factions demand more vibrant public participation accusing the government of making rushed decisions that could potentially have negative impacts to the health, environment and existence or certain species of crops.
“I say a firm no to the mad rush to import GMO Maize and other foods to Kenya. I believe that it’s irresponsible and amounts to recklessness on the part of the Kenya Kwanza government.” Miguna said through his official Twitter handle.
The government has already approved duty-free importation of 10 million bags of genetically modified maize for at least six months.
Fears are rife that the GMO maize could have already found its way into the Kenyan market.
He said the government should have given the public time for debate and participation before re-introducing GMO.
Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria sparked outrage for his controversial statement saying adding GMO to death risk factors in Kenya should not be a cause for worry.
“Being in this country you are a candidate for death and because there are many things competing for death in this country, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list.” Kuria said.
Miguna joins a list of national leaders who have opposed the move to return GMO.
