American businessman and billionaire Bill Gates is in the country and is expected to hold a series of public engagements.
The Microsoft founder was hosted by Makueni county governor Mutula Kilonzo at his office before visiting health volunteers at the Makueni Mother and Child Hospital.
“We made a serious presentation on our healthcare workers and our budgets. He had a very keen interest in knowing how we cope with the problem of receiving only 50 per cent of what we require from Kenya Medical Supplies Agency and how we plug in the gaps. He also wanted to understand the workings of community health volunteers,” Kilonzo said.
He is also expected to visit grantees and also meet with regional scientists and innovators.
Gates is expected to announce Melinda Gates Foundation’s commitment to supporting new innovations and ingenuity aimed at improving health, food security, and gender equality in African countries.
Together with the foundation leaders, they will visit and learn from farmers who are using digital tools to help with climate adaptation.
Gates will also participate in a conversation with university students, to learn and share perspectives on how innovative tools and approaches can boost efforts to increase food security and support climate adaptation across Africa.
