Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has made changes in the police department that has seen Baringo county police commander Adamson Bungei named as the new Nairobi county police boss.
Bungei has replaced Manasse Musyoka, who was yet to take over the position, a week after being named to replace James Mugera, who has since retired from the service.
Bungei previously served as Buruburu OCPD and Central before his eminent transfer to Baringo two years ago.
In line with the changes, Munga Nyale has also been transferred to Kenya Police Headquarters to serve as the director of Police Reforms.
Abdallah Komesha, recently transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters as the head of personnel, has been named the new principal deputy to the IG to succeed Nyale.
Boniface Maingi, former National Police Service (NPS) personnel director, is now the director of operations succeeding Rashid Yakub, who was appointed Director of the Community Policing wing.
IG interviewee finalist Judy Lamet, the director of Vigilance House’s Child Protection Unit, was promoted to deputy director of police operations and her position taken by Jacinta Muthoni at the police headquarters.
The changes made by Koome came concurrent with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki’s call for drastic changes in the police force to address the public outcry suggesting that the new face and structure is set to incorporate officers from other security agencies perceived to be under firm instructions to swiftly end rise of insecurity situation in Nairobi.
“We have already started taking measures already to deal with the emerging crime trend in Nairobi… In this regard, the command of the Nairobi city police has changed effective immediately… the National Police Service (NPS) has also put in a place in a multiagency, multi-disciplined response to this problem and to get these errant sons and maybe a few daughters to get out of the streets and put them where criminals belong,” stated Kindiki.
Kindiki insisted that the government was determined to restore public safety in the streets of Nairobi vowing to take the fight to criminal perpetrators.
